I’m not kidding people…’s really easy to make your own gummies. And cheap too!
I forget where I caught a glimpse of this, but I went and Googled (is that a word?) it and found this guy…..who REALLY got into it, as you can see.

So, I wanted to try it, since I am a big fan of the stuff AND I was so curious, since people claimed that all you needed was Jello, gelatin, and water!

Trust me, this is sooooo easy and fun for the kiddos too!

2 three oz. packages of flavored Jello (I know the picture shows strawberry, but I ended up using orange…….don’t want to worry anyone :)
6 envelopes of Knox unflavored gelatin
2/3 cup of cold water + half of a 1/3 c. (yeah, it confused me too)
A double- boiler setup (I just do a glass measuring cup set in a small pot with simmering water)
candy molds, or ice cube molds or whatever you want to use.

First, measure the water into the glass measuring cup and slowly add all the gelatin and Jello. Make sure to add it a little at a time and stir it in before adding more.

Once you add all the Jello & Knox together, cover it and let it sit for 10 minutes while you start boiling some water in your pot.

When the 10 minutes are up, it should look like this….or even a little thicker. It looks kinda yucky (as my daughter pointed out), but this is good.

Put the glass cup into the (now simmering) water and let the goo melt. You just want to melt it, not cook it…that’s why we are using a double-boiler. You can just do this straight in the pot, but be VERY careful not to burn it (only melt it).

Once melted it should look like this. There will be a thin layer of foamy jello, but it’s fine, that part tastes good too!

Now pour it into your molds. It will be easy since you made it a pourable glass measuring cup (see, I’m not as dumb as I look).

You can now put the molds in the fridge or freezer for 5-10 minutes to help them set faster. Once set, you can pull them right out of their molds (you don’t have to grease your molds….they shouldn’t stick to anything) and enjoy!

Once you de-mold them, be sure to store them in an airtight container or zip baggie or they will dry out.


You can find the Knox with the Jello, on the top shelf. Get the big box if you plan on making these more than once….it’s cheaper in the long run.

Candy molds can be found in the candy making aisle of any craft store or Walmart. They run around 1.50 per mold or I found a huge 10 pack of molds at Michaels for $10 bucks plus I had a %50 off coupon!!

This recipe made a HUGE batch of gummies…..around a pound! Plus you can make custom gummies for any fun occasion!

You can also half this recipe to make less. Just do 1 package of flavored Jello and 3 envelopes of Knox + 1/3 cup of cold water (plus a little).

And you can add a little less water to make firmer gummies or a little more water to make softer gummies.

These were so fun to experiment with….and my girls think I’m a genius since I can make CANDY!

    ive made these twice now. the taste good. but how do i cut down on the amount of foam i get? mine aren’t all clear likes yours and not sure what i’m doing wrong. do i need to melt it more?

  6. Krystal, I guess maybe you found molds, but for any others… can get them at Michaels, Joanns, or probably most other craft stores in the baking aisle. Also, about the foam; Make sure it is all the way melted and you can let it sit for a minute to let the foam rise to the top. Then if you have too much foam, you can either try to scoop it off with a slotted spoon or you can use something to suck the (more clear) liquid from the bottom of the measuring cup and fill the molds that way. Using one of those methods should get rid of the foam almost completly. Other than affecting the looks (clear gummies DO look prettier), I think it still tastes yummy!

    thanks so much Emily.i do get alot of foam and i did notice that once i let it sit a minutemore of the foam came to the top. they do still taste the same. my daughter loves them either way. i will be expiermenting with it mor and yes i finally did get molds at michaels wish i found more bite size ones.

  14. We’ve made these before and they ARE good! Another secret is to add a package of unsweetened Koolaid for a sour version.

    You can also make them with fruit juice instead of water for added nutrition!

  15. I had a much easier time popping them out of the flexible ice cube trays than the hard candy molds. I actually had to use a knife to pop the corner on the candy molds. On the other hand, the ones from the ice cube tray are huge. My kids loved them. We are going to make them for Valentine’s Day since the sugar-free jello is healthier than candy.

  16. Thanks for posting this. My 4 y.o. and I had a super time making a half recipe. After we finished I did some fractions and realized I should have used more water. The texture was another clue, not that it stopped us from eating them all. We can’t wait to try again! Our favorite shapes were the tubes from ice trays to make ice for water bottles. So fun!

We made our first batch today and I wanted to note: If you use the back of a spoon to “squish” the foam forming at the top of the melting goo against the side of the cup, there will be virtually no foam by the time the goo is all melted. Also: we left the goo in the double boiler on the stove while filling the molds using a syringe and only poured out the last bit of goo directly from the cup to the molds and this also seemed to keep bubbles to a minimum. The majority of our gummies turned out very clear! We will be doing another batch in a few minutes but will use less unflavored gelatin (not soft enough for us) and will be using juice in place of water for a stronger flavor. Our third batch will include a packet of unsweetened Kool-aid mix for a sour twist! Thank you so very much again for posting this… we can’t believe how easy it was to make these and how much fun it was. Oh and one more thing :) We got the pack of 10 from Michaels also but I was a little disappointed these weren’t smaller BUT I did see a hexagonal candy mold at the Hobby Lobby that was a “perfect” fruit snack size for anyone else who is still looking!

  25. Hi I’m not sure you’ll see this, but can you use regular chocolate molds for the candies? I am going to try to make a mix of colors and flavors like the mixes of store bought things, but I don’t want to buy something that’s not going to work. Are silicon molds better?

Hi Stephanie~The molds I used were clear plastic ones used for chocolate making too…..I did see a few people who made these (from my tute :) who used silicone and it looked like those worked well too, so if you happen to have some of those on hand, try ‘em out…..but you can definitely feel confident in investing in some of the choc making ones like I used…..we have used them many times since and they still work great!

    place gummies in first, then add a bottle of vodka, and seal and place in frig for about five days most of the liquid will be gone.

  32. We made these for the first time tonight! They were yummy and I didn’t have any problem with foam (not sure why). We followed directions just as written. One thing I will make sure for next time is to have more molds on hand. We only had 2 and by the time the first set was done, our mixture was getting globby and not as easy to suction out with a turkey baster! We used a honey comb-looking mold that was a great fruit snack size mold and then the other was a larger, chocolate candy size molds. My 3 girls helped and really loved the end result.   33. If you toss them in a mix of cornstarch & powdered sugar – I’d say about 50-50 – that will stop the stickiness & give you a little extra sweet on the outside. You could also add that unsweetened Koolaid powder here, too, for a tart burst! (A pinch or 2 of Vitamin C powder to the mix before you pour will also give you a little sour taste.) Plain cornstarch will, of course, do just fine…I just don’t like the feel on my fingers, or the taste, plain. Make sure to shake off all extra!

  35. we did this at camp this week using the Smithsonian kit bug molds. Wow how fantastic.
    we used sugar free jello and microwaved it for about 1 1/2 min in 20 sec periods and stirred each time.

  36. I was wondering if these were super gummy because that’s what I was looking for because I made gummies one time and the consistency was awful. But I love super tough gummies but don’t know how to achieve that.
