Here is a simple, little sewing project to bring a little LOVE into your wardrobe and it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day! I It’s so simple you don’t even need a sewing machine (that’s my kind of sewing!) I saw a sweater with heart patches on the elbows, similar to this, online at JCrew and thought it was adorable (but it was waaaaay out of my price range)! So I decided I would try to make my own.

Supplies:

Sweater or shirt that you want to put the hearts on

Fabric for the heart accents (I used my husband’s old sweater that I accidentally shrunk in the wash!)

Needle & Thread

Scissors

Sharpie

Heart shaped cookie cutter

STEP 1: Take your cookie cutter and trace the hearts on your fabric. I just used a sharpie, but you can also use a marking pencil if you have one.

STEP 2: Cut out the hearts and turn them over so you can’t see the side with the sharpie or markings.

STEP 3: Pin your hearts onto your sweater so they stay in place. You probably want to try on your sweater and pin them while you are wearing it (you’ll probably need to have someone help you- unless you are superwoman) that way you make sure that they are actually where you elbows are.

STEP 4: Hand stitch them on. Yes, it takes a little longer than a sewing machine, but I feel like the hand stitching gives it some character. So put on your favorite show, and start sewing away! It was actually really relaxing for me. I wanted to see the thread on mine to give it more of a vintage/shabby chic look, so I used a light pink thread on mine. But you can use a thread that matches your fabric if you don’t want it to show.

STEP 5: Iron your heart patches to help them lay down flat on your sweater and give it more of a polished look.

And you are done! Super easy and super cute! Wear it to your Valentine’s party, on a date, or to the grocery store. Everyone is going to ask you where you got your cute sweater, and you get to tell them that you MADE it!
